When a customer calls us and says: "I would like to schedule an inspection on a vehicle I have already bought," we are always happy to do so. However, we would rather take the call that asks: "Can I schedule an inspection on a vehicle I am considering purchasing? Buying a vehicle, whether new or used, is a considerable financial commitment and if you go the used car route, there are two invaluable tools available you should take advantage of before purchasing a vehicle:
A CARFAX Vehicle History Report is usually offered to you when looking at cars at used car dealerships or you can purchase one online using the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) or license plate for vehicles 1981 or newer. This report is great in that it tells you the service history of the vehicle, number of owners, accidents or airbag deployment, emission test results, title status, and more, but it is not an indicator of the condition the vehicle is in NOW.
Pre-purchase inspections are highly recommended for all used cars, especially those without a warranty. You want to know the issues before you buy or avoid the vehicle altogether. If a used car dealer or private party has an issue with you taking the vehicle for an inspection, it might be an indicator that something is wrong.
Specialty repair shops that work on the make of car you care interested in can be great places for an inspection. Be prepared to pay anywhere from $200-$300 for a comprehensive inspection. Shop around and ask what you are getting for your money. Ask the shop for a copy of the report they use so you can see exactly what you are paying for. Remember, no inspection is perfect or foolproof and issues can still crop up after the used car purchase but those risks can be reduced with an inspection from a reputable mechanic.
With over 30 years of experience, you can feel confident that our technicians have the expertise to pre-purchase inspect your Volvo, Saab, Subaru or Mini Cooper. Questions about the idiosyncrasies of these makes? Just give us a call!
